Out of the pocket, onto the wrist – the history of the wristwatch

The wristwatch owes its existence to the mechanical clock – the first clock with a mechanical movement which was used as early as the 14th century in church towers. Little by little, smaller clocks with pendulums became popular in private homes, until master locksmith Peter Henlein developed the balance mechanism which made the pendulum superfluous. Soon timepieces were constructed in a format that allowed them to be worn on a chain and put in waistcoat pockets. Fastening a pocket watch around your wrist was initially a ladies’ fashion, until the evidently practical benefits convinced men, particularly pilots and soldiers, to wear them in the same way. By the end of the First World War, wristwatches had established themselves as an accessory for men. Since then, the models have become increasingly complex, from both a technical and fashionable point of view. Don’t just take our word for it, see the variety of sophisticated brand watches in Heinemann’s range for yourself.

Classical, sporty or luxurious: which watch suits me best?

A watch is not changed as often as wristbands or other accessories – many people wear a watch every day, at work and during their leisure time. It is therefore all the more important to find a watch that perfectly suits your own style and personal needs.
With their subtle design, classic watches not only coordinate perfectly with your business outfit, but are also great from a practical point of view: the casing and strap are usually flat and fit easily under your jacket sleeve or suit top.
  • Sports watches, notably diver’s watches, are popular with men on account of their striking design and their sophisticated additional functions. Sports watches sit securely on your wrist and are extremely robust – and are thus very suitable for anyone with an active lifestyle.

  • Rectangular watches are really eye-catching and ideal for anyone who likes a classic design with a certain extra something. The somewhat stark look of the rectangular case is softened by the sophisticated materials and good-looking details – something quite special for a men’s and women’s watch.

  • Chronographs are worn by many people and are popular with men and women for their high-quality look. The separate stop function is not really necessary any longer in the age of the smartphone – but the quality of the craftsmanship and the technical precision of these chronographs make them the perfect watch for lovers of timepieces.
